For millennia, cocoa has held a special place in the rituals and ceremonies of various cultures (Olmec, Maya, Aztec) throughout Central and South America. Far more than just a drink mixing flour and spices, ceremonial cocoa represents a profound sensory experience, uniting body and spirit in an ancestral ritual perpetuated for thousands of years.

Origins of Ceremonial Cocoa
Cocoa, originally from the Amazonian regions of South America, was considered by ancient civilizations as a gift from the gods. The Mayans (600 BC) and Aztecs (400 AD), in particular, used cocoa in religious ceremonies, shamanic rituals, and weddings. The cocoa beverage was often associated with spirituality, connection with the divine, and the pursuit of visions.
How to choose the right Ceremonial Cocoa
Cocoa is a plant that has changed significantly since the time of the Mayans and Aztecs. Modified by modern agricultural practices, plantation cocoa has been selected for its productivity rather than its quality. This is why we recommend using wild Amazonian cocoa. Originating from the birthplace of the cocoa tree, it will offer all the natural benefits of the beans, without alteration due to human selection, pesticides, or fertilizers.
By choosing wild Amazonian cocoa, you will also have the chance to enjoy old genetic strains, such as the Nacional (on the left below), offering softer and rounder aromas than its neighbors, such as Forastero or Criollo, which are more acidic and bitter.

This cocoa is called "ceremonial" and is a 100% cocoa bean paste, rich in theobromine and other beneficial molecules (serotonin, proanthocyanidin, anandamide, methylxanthines, tryptophan, phenylethylamine). The cocoa paste is minimally processed so as not to alter the natural character of the cocoa.

Our selection of ceremonial cocoa closest to its ancestral form is the Rio Tocantins. It comes from wild cocoa from the upper Amazon basin, on the banks of the Tocantins River (the original area of Theobroma Nacional cocoa).

Preparation and Associated Rituals
The preparation of ceremonial cocoa is a deliberate and significant process. Cocoa beans are harvested, fermented, dried, and then roasted. Once the beans are processed, they are ground to produce a cocoa paste. This paste is then mixed with other ingredients such as sugar, vanilla, or spices, according to local traditions.

The consumption of ceremonial cocoa is often accompanied by specific rituals. Prayers, songs, dances, or meditations can be integrated to create a sacred atmosphere. Cocoa is considered a means of connecting with oneself, with others, and with the universe.
The Physical and Spiritual Benefits of Cocoa
In addition to its sensory properties, ceremonial cocoa is also appreciated for its physical and spiritual benefits. It contains psychoactive compounds such as theobromine, which can induce a feeling of well-being and lightness. Furthermore, the presence of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and phenylethylamine can promote states of relaxation and euphoria.
On a spiritual level, cocoa is often considered a consciousness amplifier thanks to theobromine (similar to caffeine). Some participants report experiences of mental clarity, deep introspection, and even inspiring visions. Cocoa acts as a catalyst, facilitating access to altered states of consciousness, often used for meditative or healing purposes.
The Revival of Ceremonial Cocoa in the Modern World
While ancient traditions endure, ceremonial cocoa is experiencing a resurgence of interest in the modern world. From meditation practitioners to wellness enthusiasts, more and more people are integrating ceremonial cocoa into their spiritual routine, sometimes even daily.
An Ancient Connection in a Modern World
Ceremonial cocoa offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with ancient traditions, stimulate the senses, and explore deeper levels of consciousness. Whether for meditation, inner healing, or simply to enjoy a moment of conscious pause, ceremonial cocoa embodies the union between tradition and modernity, offering a sensory journey that transcends time and space.
